47 Ronin

47_Ronin_poster47 Ronins is out now in cinemas, and I was ecstatic that I get to watch it in it’s premier showing here. The story begins when Lord Asano of Ako, together with his Samurai was hunting in the forest and found a half-breed, exhausted and injured. One of the leading Samurai disapproves to take the half-breed back with them, believing that he is a demon and will bring bad luck to the land but Lord Asano sees something in him and decided to take him under his care.

Several years later, Kai, the half-breed has grown into a fine man. He is very thankful to Lord Asano for taking care of him, not only was Lord Asano a great leader and father he also did a good job in making Ako a rich land.

The tragedy started when the Shogun arranged a tournament between the best warrior of Lord Asano and Lord Kira. That night Lord Asano is bewitched in hurting Lord Kira and was punished by the Shogun to commit Seppukku, leaving the Samurais leaderless and becoming Ronins.

Recognizing that everything is part of Lord Kira’s evil plan, Oishi, the master Ronin, made a vow to avenge their master. Now it’s up to Kai and the forty-seven Ronins to give back the Honor of their master that was stolen from him.

The movie is based on a true story popularized by the fictional accounts known as Chūshingura. Personally I like the movie even if a lot of Japanese is showing otherwise.

The movie is packed with action and special effects that are both pleasing to the eyes. You can say that it’s a testosterone filled movie with just enough drama and love story along the way.

Top 10 Christmas Movies

#10 Elf

Elf

It all started when a baby crawls in Santa’s sack at the orphanage. At the North pole, Papa Elf decided to take care of the baby and calls him Buddy.

30 yrs later, Buddy didn’t know he is human, until his enormous size and poor toy-making skills cause Papa Elf to tell him the truth.

When Buddy finds out that he is born human and his real parents are Walter Hobbs and Susan Wells, he sets out a journey to go to the human world to look for his parents.

Elf movie is supposed to be funny and lit your face with a smile. Although not all adults will appreciate the movie, I’m sure that kids will definitely love the film.

#9 Rise of the Guardians

The Boogeyman is devising a plan so that kids will not believe in the guardians, making them lose their powers.

Lead by Jack Frost, selected by the man in the moon as the newest guardian, they set out to defeat Pitch, the Boogeyman.

The movie is not really a Christmas movie, but it will surely rekindle the feeling to believe in magic and what is unseen. Not to mention the awesome graphics DreamWorks invested in the animation.

#8 How The Grinch Stole Christmas

How The Grinch Stole Christmas

The story is set in the town of Whoville. It exists on a tiny snowflake floating through the air. The Who’s are the citizens of town that also loves Christmas, and is planning for the upcoming  holiday.

Every one in Whoville dislikes the Grinch, because he alone hates Christmas. Everyone doesn’t care about him, except for the little girl Cindy Lou Who.

Cindy becomes nice to the Grinch and befriended him. But is it enough to stop the Grinch from ruining Christmas this year?

The Movie has a great lesson that kids and adults alike will appreciate. It teaches the value and the true spirit of Christmas, which is being together and sharing.

# 7 The Polar Express

The Polar Express
Based on the storybook written by Chris Van Allsburg, the film is about a boy who starts to doubt the existence of Santa. Late one Christmas eve he lays awake waiting for Santa to come by, but instead he heard a thunderous sound outside his window.

He boards the magical train parked in the middle of the street, and is headed to the North Pole where Santa lives. On the train, he meets lots of other children. It’s not a smooth journey on their way to the North Pole, specially for a doubting kid.

A lot of adult can relate to the movie as we ourselves experienced the same thing that happened to him, we lost our belief to Santa. What’s good about the movie is, it teaches every one of us, that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.

#6 Home Alone

Home Alone

Kevin McCallister is a haughty 8-year-old boy who wishes for his family to disappear, after a fight with his brother Buzz.

The next morning when he was accidentally left behind and his whole family went to their Christmas vacation in France, he was overjoyed thinking his wish cam true.

With his newly found freedom, he is enjoying every single second that he’s alone, doing things that he doesn’t normally do.

Then Kevin discovers about two Burglars, about to rob his house on Christmas eve. Now it’s up to Kevin to save the day. Will he win?

The plot may be implausible, but were talking about Christmas here, a season of miracles and fantasy.

As a kid getting left behind and having the entire house for yourself sure is fun. So is the movie, you will enjoy this comedy film, both adults and kids alike.

#5 Edward Scissorhand

Edward scissorhand

Gathered around the fireplace, an elderly woman tells her grand children a story of where snow comes from. The story begins with Edward, a boy created by a scientist who had everything except for hands.

Edward has scissors for hands and is living at the top of the hill in the old inventors mansion. One day a local Avon saleslady decided to visit the mansion. When she realizes that Edward is all alone and harmless, she decided to take her home.

Soon, Edward gained popularity for his skills in hedge-trimming and hair cutting. This made some of the neighbors are jelouos causing them to plot bad things against Edward for him to get arrested.

Edward Scissorhand is surely a bizarre movie. But all I can say is this is one of Tim Burton’s best, it’s a bit dark but the movie has a lot of heart.

#4 The Santa Clause

The Santa Clause

Divorcee Scott Calvin started his adventure when he accidentally killed the real Santa. He is a scrooge that doesn’t believe in Father Christmas. However his 6-year-old son Charlie, refuses to believe that Santa don’t exist.

Even if Scott already saw Santa fell from his roof, he still brushes it off as someone pretending to be Santa. All that changed all of a sudden he is magically recruited to be the next Santa. He started gaining weight, his hair is becoming white and his beard remains unshaven.

Scott is not used to this Santa Problems and is getting a hard time acting nice. Charlie on the other hand is very excited with his dad’s new job. He totally believes in the magic of Christmas and is determined to help his dad do what Santa is supposed to. The only problem is making the doubters believe that Santa is real, including his former wife.

The Santa Clause is a heart warming movie that both kids and adult will enjoy.

#3 A Christmas Carol

christmas_carol2

Ebenezer Scrooge is a Victorian-era cheapskate, an owner of a money lending business.  He certainly hates everything that embodies Christmas, being nasty all through out the year.

One Christmas eve, the ghost of his former business partner visited him. Bearing with him a warning that if Ebenezer will not change his ways, he will also spend his afterlife carrying heavy chains. He also said that three spirits will haunt him that night to guide him.

Scrooge was visited by the spirit of Christmas Past, the spirit of Christmas Present and the spirit of Christmas yet to come.

The film teaches us the real value of things. It will leave us thinking as to what is really important in this world.

#2 The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas

It’s the same old routine in Halloween Town, and Jack Skellington is so fed up in preparing for Halloween Every year.  While wandering through the wood he discovered the doorway to other Holidays, but one door in particular caught his attention. It was the doorway to Christmas Town.

For the first time the Pumpkin King touched snow, he heard Christmas carol everywhere, and the scent of freshly baked cookies filled the air.  He’s pleased to discover something new, something so different from the Town he came from. In Christmas town, everything is bright, beautiful and everyone looks happy.

Upon going back to Halloween Town, Jack shared his experience o the town. He decided that this year they will take over Christmas. Sandy on the other hand, the rag doll made by the town’s mad scientist, believes that Jack’s plan is wrong, so she tried to stop it. But does Sandy have  the influence to demand Jack what is right?

The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my favorite Christmas movie. Visually the film is absolutely gorgeous and the songs are brilliant. The stop motion animation is flawless and the scenery is very creative, the film will surely leave you entertained.

#1 Miracle on 34th Street

Miracle on 34th Street

The events director of Macy’s department store, Doris Walker, hired an old man to replace the stores Santa Clause. The man proves to be inspiring to the shoppers, until Doris finds out that he calls himself Kris Kringle because he believes that he is the real Santa Clause.

Doris doesn’t believe in miracles and make believe, so she immediately thought that Kris is crazy.  However, her daughter Susan, which she also trained not to believe in fantasies, is seeing something special about Kris and his determination to bring back the true meaning of Christmas.

When a conflict between Kris and the store’s psychologist boils, that’s where Kris finds himself in court. Will he be able to win the case and prove to everyone that he is the real Santa Clause?

This film really is a Christmas Classic. Even the acting of the characters are so different from what we are used to. There is a remake of the movie in 2004 but as I’ve heard, the film is not as good as the original. The movie grabs the number one spot on my list because it teaches us the true meaning of Christmas.

Thor : The Dark World

downloadThor: The Dark World is better, funnier and definitely a far cry from the first one. In the movie, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) asked for Loki’s help (Tod Hiddleston) to fight an evil Dark Elf’s sinister plan, from unleashing the Aether, an ancient force of infinite destruction.

The super villain Malekith is planning to annihilate the Nine Realms. As the king of the Realm Asgard, Odin (Anthony Hopkins) orders his son Thor to end Malekith’s intentions.

Additionally the “Guardians of the Galaxy” is slowly introduced in this film, it is an upcoming science fiction film based on the Marvel Comics superhero team.

Since most of the scenes are played out in Asgard and other distant dimensions, director Taylor did a great job in delivering his most compelling setpieces. The backdrop is a straight up fantasy world, serving as a good crossover from the first movie to the marvel Comics Asgard.

Overall I’m giving 8 stars out of 10 to Thor: The Dark World, both for its story line and great landscape.

Top 10 Horror Movies

# 10 28 Days Later

download

It all started when a deadly virus swept the human population. Bike courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up in a hospital bed after 28 days in coma. For a moment there, it seems like he is the only man living on the face of the Earth. He isn’t alone however. London has been evacuated after the virus outbreak which turns its victims into mindless zombies. There are others who are not affected as well and they all team up to find other survivors.

Personally I don’t believe that it is as epic as most people did but still it’s a reasonably good zombie movie. Waking up to a zombie apocalypse is a scary thought and the film is successful in conveying that feeling to the audience.

#9 The Others

images (2)

The Others, starring Nicole Kidman as grace is a religious mother with two daughters who has moved with her family to a mansion, while waiting for her husband from world war 2.

It is a well-made creepy and scary movie blended with period drama. The plot is so intense, that it leaves a lasting effect. There aren’t too many movies like this around, which makes it truly stand out.

#8 The Mist

200px-Mist2007

The Mist is a horror novel written by the American author Stephen King. A small town in Maine is suddenly enveloped by an unusual mist that conceals otherwordly monsters.

At first I wasn’t impressed with the movie but as the story unfolds I find myself entwined with the story. It’s not your typical horror movie with crazy serial killer. It’s very thought provoking because as you watch the film you yourself will ask “What will I do if I were in their shoes?”.

#7 Bram Stoker’s Dracula

dracula-movie-poster-1992-1020540197

Bram Stoker’s Dracula is an American Horror film directed and produced by Francis Ford Coppola, based on the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker.

The story started when Vlad Dracula (Gary Oldman) renounces God after learning that his wife had committed suicide when she received a false report of his death.
Mina (Winona Ryder), Professor Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins) and Jonathan’s (Keannu Reeves) adventure now begins. As they encounter vampires, were-wolves and other
unworldly creatures.

Even if the film is quite old and doesn’t have superb special effects, the plot will surely keep audiences captivated, as Count Dracula enticed Mina in the film.

#6 Saw

saw_ver1

Saw film revolves around a kidnapped victim who is given an instruction explaining how to escape a gruesome death. The Jigsaw killer is the mastermind of the “games” that he intricately planned to have the victims play.

“Saw’ got its name from the first movie, the victims (Adam a photographer and Lawrence an oncologist) are chained at the ankles to pipes, Adam finds a bag containing two hacksaws which they use to try cutting through the chains. Adam breaks his and Lawrence realizes that the saws are actually meant for their feet.

Saw 3 is the most popular of the series if you are guessing which sequel to watch first.

#5 Child’s Play

movieposter

Child’s Play is a cheerfully energetic horror film. The film opens when a doll has been possessed by the mind and the soul of a mass murderer who studied voodoo from a  black magician. Chucky, the sinister doll is behind the killings and unexplained murders.

Of all the Child’s Play sequel it seems like the latest sequel is by far the most popular, Curse of Chucky. Child’s Play 3 is the least popular earning only $20,560,255 worldwide.

#4 Orphan

images

The movie Orphan revolves around the story of a family that adopted a nine year old russian kid named Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman). Behind the sweet innocent veil she is wearing, hides a deranged, creepy girl.

It can be concluded that Esther is just a little spoiled brat that gets what she wants, even if it means killing them.

Orphan is a chilling movie and I find the mind games very intriguing. The movie has an awesome twist at the end that is very unpredictable.

#3 I am Legend

I_am_legend_teaser

I am Legend is not faithful to the book it got its name from, but I don’t care. It’s a totally different media anyway. Even if Robert Neville (Will Smith) is the only man left living in the center of New York city, he is such a powerful actor that he alone made the film very engaging.

And although the special effects is substandard, the film compensates with a level of emotional depth and awe-inspiring plot.

#2 The Crow

crow

The Crow is based on a comic book by the same name, It stars Brandon Lee playing as Eric Draven. The story begins when a group of thugs murdered him and his fiance.

After a year he was resurrected by a crow that also acts as his guide showing him the way.

The Crow is a straight up revenge film. It’s gothic, dark and one of the best comic book adaptation ever made. It is a must see this Halloween season and I am certain
you will not get disappointed.

#1 The Sixth Sense

The_sixth_sense

The Sixth Sense is not a gruesome movie, unlike the other films we have in our list. The film revolves around Cole Sear’s (Haley Joel Osment) psychic powers to see dead people around him. He is constantly teriffied and he felt that he can only share his secret to Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) who is also a child psychologist.

However as the doctor probes into Cole’s strange power, instead of finding an answer, he is confronted with more questions.

Some critics argue that the pace of the plot is very slow and they are compelled to keep themselves awake until the movie ends. This might be true to some of the scenes, however the ending gives us an unexpected twist. Over all the movie is thought-provoking, The Sixth Sense is scary and smart, taking the number one spot in my
list.

X-Men_Days_of_Future_Past

X-Men: Days Of Future Past – Trailer

X-Men_Days_of_Future_Past

The ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST.

The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from “X-Men: First Class,” in an epic battle that must change the past — to save our future.

This is also a great teaser trailer website => http://www.trask-industries.com/

Days Of Future Past finds Professor X (Patrick Stewart), Magneto (Ian McKellen), Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and the current X-team confronting a dark alternate future where mutants are an endangered species, tracked down, imprisoned or killed thanks to Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage)’s Sentinel program and an overwhelming level of distrust aimed at them from regular humans.

They boldly plan to send Wolverine’s consciousness back in time to the First Class era (or a few years after we last met those versions of the characters) to convince the younger Professor X (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and the rest to work together to stop the threat at its source

We love the X-Men for many reasons and we hope this version will capture some of the magic that fans and newcomers have been waiting for.

Only time will tell.. what do you think?

Frozen Movie 3D

Disney Frozen Trailer

For those of us that love animated movies and in particular Disney movies, Frozen looks like a lot of fun.

The main characters are strong women (from the trailer) who live in a world that brings magic, fantasy and roles together. In short a Disney movie..

The animation looks great and plot looks to have enough to take the interest of boys and girls, mums and dads alike.

The snowman come alive is sure to be a favourite with the kids.

Let us know what you think..

The Conspiracy

The Conspiracy (2012)

We were suggested to watch Conspiracy (2012) by several of our inner circle members.

The premise is that the movie is “A documentary about conspiracy theories which takes a horrific turn after the filmmakers uncover an ancient and dangerous secret society.”

For those that love connecting the dots and grew up on X Files, this makes a fun movie to watch on a wet or quiet afternoon.

The pace builds from the comic/drama of observation to pointed insights and builds to a high climax.

Several lines stand out, and we think most people will find something of value.

If you don’t like conspiracy theories, or even think they are possible then this may crack the door.

If you do.. just remember.. it’s just a movie right.

The end… well it will leave you thinking.

In the end.. glad we watched it.. and not blasting it to dust.. and clear it’s the kind of movie that will build.

For any want to be world changer.. or documentary maker.. worth a watch.

Gravity

Gravity Review

Vamers-FYI-Movies-Gravity-Official-Poster-496x733Just watched the movie Gravity last night.. I have seen the trailer before and honestly I was not impressed by it thus I was not expecting anything extraordinary when I entered the movie theaters. But BOY WAS I WRONG!

The movie started with a shot of Earth like I never saw it before and all through out the movie it repeatedly shows a different shot on a different angle, it is almost like the planet is another cast member.

One of my favorite scenes is when Ryan (Sandra Bullock) is in a tense and very dangerous scenario but on the back-drop it shows a contrasting beauty of the Northern-lights (aurora borealis)

speaking of cast members, they could not have picked a better cast, George Clooney’s intense but calm and collected facade as the Astronaut “Matt” and “Ryan” his complete opposite, an inexperienced Astronaut hired for her scientific and hard-ware expertise.

The movie took me on a roller-coaster ride, it has touched multiple aspects of human-life struggles.

First it showed how humans amid impossible circumstances can persevere through the impossible to acheive a goal, it also showed how critical teamwork and focus is in problem solving.

it also showed 2 different and very contrasting death scenarios.. sacrifice and suicide. And how noble one can be and how selfish is the other.

Hope and faith was also portrayed as a very important aspect on how we live our lives.

*Spoiler alert*
Ryan is an atheist and by the end of the movie she was converted.
*Spoiler alert*

All in all I will give this movie a 15/10 score.

Definitely worth watching specially on IMAX.

It was one hell of a ride.

Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim Review

pacific_rim_ver3Pacific Rim, directed by Del Toro, offers an intoxicating visual effects and fight scenes. It caters both to adult viewers who were fascinated by Godzilla and the new generations hooked by robots.

The film revolves around giant monsters, colossal mechas, linked brains, aliens and portals. These are some of the most effective ingredients in film making to grab the attention of viewers since it’s the core of pop culture currently.

The Robots specifically are very plausible as it still needs the complex human brain to control it.

As for the ammunitions they are composed of incinerator turbines, plasma casters, sting blades, nuclear vortex turbine and the likes, so the mechas doesn’t need heavey projectile-firing guns which are a waste of resources and will definitely add weight to the machines making it a near-perfect allusion.

All-in-all movie was an 8 / 10 in my books and I am 100% expecting a sequel and hoping this will be a long franchise.
