Kingsman The Secret Service

Kingsman The Secret Service

 http://www.kingsmanmovie.com/

So.. is this the remake of British Cool.. the restart for JB.. James Bond.. we’ve been waiting for … or.. well something else.

Firstly this movie, knows it’s a movie, and know’s to play to the crowd.. the only question.. what crowd is it aiming at.. and we’re a little worried that it’s aimed after the kinda crowd.. that well.. isn’t necessarily the one we’d have chosen.. and in so doing.. will fail on multiple levels.. Yes it will get box office and applause.. but in a decade will it stand.. we think not. which is a shame.

There are some exceptional moments, some intelligent choreography and plot twists and for those of us who know.. http://s.ecret.me/ closer to the truth. (tell them Simon sent you..)

Ok.. the plus’.. it’s not overly sacharine.. You will laugh at time.. Strong athletics and physicality.. in places. Interesting plots and ideas..  One of the most striking is Algerian dancer and actress Sofia Boutella, who plays deadly henchwoman Gazelle.

The not so good.. overly gratuitous violence.. think for 15year old boys.. a weird anal sex line.. why required? what’s the point. Some silly overly simplified role plays – plebs vs not.. boys that say “bruv”..  The over the top swearing.. just so you can..

It was like someone had watched the English football hooligan movies and said.. what if we did that with James Bond.. and then had Mr Cool… Samuel L Jackson.. play the bad guy..

We overly simplify.

All in all.. we’re frustrated and fascinated.

This could have been amazing.

As it is.. I’m not even sure if we’d recommend you go watch it..

Shaun of the Dead – had humour..

Kingsman.. falls over and doesn’t quite cut it.

So.. who let the script through? do they care?

Will there be a sequel?

What could have been a really intelligent long standing movie that was genre defining was in our view let down by production and directorial vision..

We’ve been asked to help with a few film projects and we’re clearer why this happens.. Someone starts thinking ego, money and funny.. not real artwork and edutainment.

For me.. the opening pieces were most telling and poignant.

So.. if you loved The Avengers.. , 60s tv.. and well you want a silly movie.. watch this..

can you tell we’re confused our self..  we so want to love Kingsman…. time for a fan cut.. or reboot..

And Sir Michael C.. a gem as always..

End of Tomorrow

Now Edge of Tomorrow is a sci-fi/action movie that surprised me. I wasn’t expecting much but after watching the trailer I’m sure I will watch this when it comes out. The movie is about an alien race invading Earth and a soldier caught in a time loop, reliving his last day in battle.

22 Jump Street

22 Jump Street is certainly a comedy/action film and a sequel to 21 Jump Street movie. After going through high school twice, Schmidt and Jenko go in deep undercover in a local college. Their adventure and misadventures will surely make you laugh.

The Transformers series continues with this fourth movie. A mechanic and his daughter discovers the existence of Autobots and Decepticons. Which certainly puts them under the governments radar.

That are some of the movies to look forward to watching for the first half of 2014. We will feature other movies for the 2nd half soon. Watch out for it.

The Butler

Forest Whitaker is quietly powerful as a White House servant who lived through the long battle for civil rights.

We were lucky enough to watch a screening of this movie several months ago before it reached it’s European release.

It is a slow building movie that will fundamentally shift how you think about many things including our own judgements and on how we can each make a difference.

There is clearly an agenda or two running through the movie though that can hardly be surprising.

Some of the actors are too well known in our view.. and an unknown cast might have made for a bigger impact but the overall effect is a movie that we think will go down well.. If it will last .. is to be seen.

Moneyball

MoneyBall

MoneyBall starting Brad Pitt is a movie that many missed.

Recommended by many of our friends and partners it made for an ideal home movie.

The film has several arcs and patterns – the classic sport/baseball story, the characters and their journey from abyss to passion, mathematics and the rise of the “nerd” and many more.

It’s beautifully made an holds the tension well.

You care about the players and the leads.

You see behind the romance to the numbers.

It will make you think.

The idea that most of the market doesn’t understand the game and undervalues what’s important – is something we can all get I believe and makes the movie worth watching for that alone.

Do yourself a favour and get hold of this today.. and settle in for a proper movie.

A movie that doesn’t rely on sci-fi cgi.. (though we love that)

If you’ve seen Baseball before.. all the better..

if not maybe you’ll want to..

Moneyball is an American 2011 biographical sports drama film directed by Bennett Miller from a screenplay by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. The film is based on Michael Lewis’s 2003 nonfiction book of the same name, an account of the Oakland Athletics baseball team’s 2002 season and their general manager Billy Beane’s attempts to assemble a competitive team. In the film, Beane (Brad Pitt) and assistant GM Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), faced with the franchise’s unfavorable financial situation, take a sophisticated sabermetric approach towards scouting and analyzing players, acquiring “submarine” pitcher Chad Bradford (Casey Bond) and former catcher Scott Hatteberg (Chris Pratt), and winning 20 consecutive games, an American League record.
Columbia Pictures bought the rights to Lewis’s book in 2004.[4] After a number of years in development, the film was featured at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival[5] and was released on September 23, 2011 to a box-office success and positive reviews. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Actor and Best Picture.

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby Review

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

The trailer is a wonderful piece of cinema – rich, luscious, enticing and teasing which we’ve come to love and expect from Baz Luhrmann.

So it was with anticipation that we went to the screening.

The movie starts slowly and draws you in, weaving a tapestry of plots and characters that will entice and revolt, delight and surprise.

To avoid too many more spoilers, this is an adult film with adult themes, which touched on many aspects and I’m sure will have people coming back to watch time after time.

The stellar cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire play their roles well and Leonardo is a great Gatsby. For a man who has played his life from the early days in stellar roles and living a Gatsbyesque lifestyle it seems apt.

This is a piece of art produced outside of time and with a heart that comes across.

It has some dark elements, which highlight all the more the good and joyful aspects of the movie.

Our need to fit in, to be perceived as doing right, to earn money, to love and be loved, to trust and be trusted – all these and more are exposed in this movie.

Django Unchained

Review: Django Unchained

Django Unchained

The hype about the movie sets up a lot of questions. Tarentino remains one of the most loved and hated directors.

The movie starts strongly, and Jamie Foxx has a gravity on film that is undeniable.

The character of the Doctor is one of my favourite characters in some time.

The movie builds tension and suspense well, and you will be constantly beguiled by the soundtrack and  visual tapestry that unfolds step by step.

There are moments were the blood flows in the movie but not as much as in other films and truthfully it plays an important element.

There are scenes that will shock and leave you questioning the moral line. Half way through a scene with dogs being set on someone for example.

The final act of the movie is one of those.

This movie will not be to everyone’s taste, nor is it the movie that many will expect.

We believe it is a very important movie that in time will be come to be loved as one of Tarentino’s best

Notable change of tone and possible a piece that could have been filmed differently is Samuel L Jackson’s character which feels slightly more like Samuel L Jackson than a truly separate character at the start. He is truly scary and terrifying.

One fact that shocked many viewers was the true nature of Alexandre Dumas. I wonder how many people already knew that he was black?

Overall: Stick with it – you’ll love it if you can watch the whole way through.

The Watch

The Watch

TThe Watchhe Watch Trailer 2 (2012). Suburban dads who form a neighborhood watch group find themselves defending the Earth from an alien invasion !

Aliens are coming.. to a mid town in the USA…

This is a conventional premise but the Ben Stiller crew have taken it … well to a whole different level.

I don’t know who / how the script was constructed, but it resembles the child like narratives of Wayne’s World.

A fascination with jokes about … male reproductive organs, etc.. leave little room to guess at the main audience target.

Strangely coupled with a sub plot about revealing the truth of a low sperm count by the main hero.

Oh, and the story of a father dealing with a young girl going out for the first time..

This movie will make you laugh in places.

It will make you groan in others.

Was it fun.. well kind of, and this morning it has left more memories than we expected.

Was it the best movie ever … no.

Was there clear product placement.. Costco, Trojan, and others.. yes..

Does that matter.. not really.

For all about the most forward thinking of relationships this is not a date movie in our view.

All in all.. this one is to be seen where it will go.

I can imagine it was “fun” to film.. but not what you’d expect from this calibre of actors and production.

Maybe we were in the wrong mood or the right mood.

Maybe just we’re used to more here in Blighty, and this felt like a half attempt at going off piste..

So.. from the team at Film Blast.. our fingers are in the orb… and we’re powering up.

Not sure if we’re going to blast or not.. yet…

Classic lines..

“Is it true that your father ripped the XX*A of your last boyfriend? I’ll get your daughter home by 10:30pm sir… ”

ps.

if you like the IT Crowd.. Richard Ayoade our star is there.. but not in Kansas anymore..

Visual: 8/10
Script: 6/10
Overall: 6/10

Total Recall

Total Recall

Total Recall – 2012 – Review

Official Site: http://www.welcometorecall.com/

Total Recall

Total Recall

An interesting premise, a world with limited viable space, the idea of The Fall – a trans global though centre of the earth travel – and vision of the future has the seeds of a great movie.

Rekall.. where you can implant memories… What would you like… A spy perhaps?

The police crash in and the following scene is one of the best in our opinion.

The question of what is reality is a key one.

The opening sequence where our hero looks out onto the future world is usually impressive. A multi dimensional multi layered warren of housing and living space.

The scenes remind of many Sci Fi films, but this is no bad thing.

Add to this magnetic cars and a world filled with mag lev (magnetic levitation), and throw in the display glass of Minority Report and Day of Glass (Corning) ( see YouTube and be blown away ).

The catches:

Obvious plot glitches …. Why doesn’t the toxic air spread everywhere? Why doesn’t she just kill him when he’s asleep? Why would the prime minister also lead his own army with massive risk? What happens next? Was it all just a dream… ?

Overall:

It was a fun movie to watch for the boys night out. The chase scenes, the industrial spaces, and the not too serious dialogue. You may jump in parts. Enjoy.

P.s.
This is not the Total Recall of our child hood…

Visual: 7/10
Plot: 6/10
Script: 6/10
Fun: 7/10

Note:

Total Recall is a 2012 American science fiction action film remake of the 1990 film of the same name, in turn loosely based on the 1966 short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Unlike the original film and short story, the plot does not include a trip to Mars[4] and exhibits more political overtones. The film blends Western and Eastern influences, most notably in the settings and dominant populations of the two nation states in the story: the United Federation of Britain, and the Colony.

Cast

  • Colin Farrell as Douglas Quaid/Carl Hauser, a factory worker suffering from strange violent dreams who serves as the film’s protagonist.[7]
  • Kate Beckinsale as Lori, a UFB undercover agent posing as Quaid’s wife.[8]
  • Jessica Biel as Melina, a member of the Resistance and Quaid’s love interest.[8]
  • Bryan Cranston as Chancellor Vilos Cohaagen, the corrupt and ruthless dictator of the UFB who serves as the film’s main antagonist.[9]
  • Bokeem Woodbine as Harry, Quaid’s “best friend”.
  • Bill Nighy as Matthias Lair, the leader of the Resistance.[10]
  • John Cho as Bob McClane, a rep for Rekall who offers Quaid the chance to experience an imagined adventure.[11]
  • Kaitlyn Leeb as The Seductive Woman (aka The Three-Breasted Woman)[12][13]
