The Butler

Forest Whitaker is quietly powerful as a White House servant who lived through the long battle for civil rights.

We were lucky enough to watch a screening of this movie several months ago before it reached it’s European release.

It is a slow building movie that will fundamentally shift how you think about many things including our own judgements and on how we can each make a difference.

There is clearly an agenda or two running through the movie though that can hardly be surprising.

Some of the actors are too well known in our view.. and an unknown cast might have made for a bigger impact but the overall effect is a movie that we think will go down well.. If it will last .. is to be seen.

Moneyball

MoneyBall

MoneyBall starting Brad Pitt is a movie that many missed.

Recommended by many of our friends and partners it made for an ideal home movie.

The film has several arcs and patterns – the classic sport/baseball story, the characters and their journey from abyss to passion, mathematics and the rise of the “nerd” and many more.

It’s beautifully made an holds the tension well.

You care about the players and the leads.

You see behind the romance to the numbers.

It will make you think.

The idea that most of the market doesn’t understand the game and undervalues what’s important – is something we can all get I believe and makes the movie worth watching for that alone.

Do yourself a favour and get hold of this today.. and settle in for a proper movie.

A movie that doesn’t rely on sci-fi cgi.. (though we love that)

If you’ve seen Baseball before.. all the better..

if not maybe you’ll want to..

Moneyball is an American 2011 biographical sports drama film directed by Bennett Miller from a screenplay by Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. The film is based on Michael Lewis’s 2003 nonfiction book of the same name, an account of the Oakland Athletics baseball team’s 2002 season and their general manager Billy Beane’s attempts to assemble a competitive team. In the film, Beane (Brad Pitt) and assistant GM Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), faced with the franchise’s unfavorable financial situation, take a sophisticated sabermetric approach towards scouting and analyzing players, acquiring “submarine” pitcher Chad Bradford (Casey Bond) and former catcher Scott Hatteberg (Chris Pratt), and winning 20 consecutive games, an American League record.
Columbia Pictures bought the rights to Lewis’s book in 2004.[4] After a number of years in development, the film was featured at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival[5] and was released on September 23, 2011 to a box-office success and positive reviews. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Actor and Best Picture.

Frozen Movie 3D

Disney Frozen Trailer

For those of us that love animated movies and in particular Disney movies, Frozen looks like a lot of fun.

The main characters are strong women (from the trailer) who live in a world that brings magic, fantasy and roles together. In short a Disney movie..

The animation looks great and plot looks to have enough to take the interest of boys and girls, mums and dads alike.

The snowman come alive is sure to be a favourite with the kids.

Let us know what you think..

The Conspiracy

The Conspiracy (2012)

We were suggested to watch Conspiracy (2012) by several of our inner circle members.

The premise is that the movie is “A documentary about conspiracy theories which takes a horrific turn after the filmmakers uncover an ancient and dangerous secret society.”

For those that love connecting the dots and grew up on X Files, this makes a fun movie to watch on a wet or quiet afternoon.

The pace builds from the comic/drama of observation to pointed insights and builds to a high climax.

Several lines stand out, and we think most people will find something of value.

If you don’t like conspiracy theories, or even think they are possible then this may crack the door.

If you do.. just remember.. it’s just a movie right.

The end… well it will leave you thinking.

In the end.. glad we watched it.. and not blasting it to dust.. and clear it’s the kind of movie that will build.

For any want to be world changer.. or documentary maker.. worth a watch.

Upside Down – Trailer

Upside Down is an interesting movie, and the trailer will definitely get you thinking.

What if there were twin planets with different gravities..

It’s definitely a movie that will intrigue those of us that like the altered world variety, from the Matrix to Dark Cities.

It’s going to be interesting to see reviews when the movie goes live.

“Upside Down is a 2012 French-Canadian romantic fantasy film written and directed by Juan Diego Solanas. Starring Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst, the film is about a man searching an alternate universe for a long-lost love from his youth”

Monsters Inc 3d

Monsters Inc 3D

Monsters Inc 3d

Monsters Inc 3d

One of the movies that was a turning point for the genres has come back for the Xmas season (and to help with the marketing of Monsters University) and this time it’s in 3D.

If you know the movie already there will be some obvious places where 3D has the potential to have a big impact – the scare scenes, the door chase, etc..

We saw the movie in a great cinema and with our favourite 5 year old film reviewer (he hadn’t seen the movie in 2D).

The film still has the same surprises and characters that will enchant many.

Our 5 year old jumped in places and maybe caused by the 3d genuinely got “upset” in parts.

Does the 3D make the movie.. well when we compare with Life of Pi which would not have been the same movie in 2D by any shape of the imagination, I don’t personally feel that Monster’s Inc 3d was really that much of a step forward.

Perhaps it was the screen, or the mood, overall yes a great movie – though somehow it felt “darker” this time around (and yes we’ve seen it many many times before…)

It’s interesting to think back the history of Pixar, especially with the legacy of Steve Jobs and the other impacts happening globally.

We’ve seen the future and the future is holographics (http://www.THEfutureINadvance.com) and watching a movie like Monsters Inc in that format would be truly life changing.

ps

Our 5 year old did ask an interesting question – why do people love 3d so much?

Be warned you will walk by the Disney store and the merchandise is back in force…
