grimsby

Grimsby

This is a movie that makes no sense, and yet was made, and will I’m sure be watched again and again.

Partly it’s the right movie at the right time, much like the Carry On films. In fifty years from now will they look on this and laugh or despair.. who knows.

Nobby, a sweet but dimwitted English football hooligan, reunites with his long-lost brother Sebastian, a deadly MI6 agent, to prevent a massive global terror attack and prove that behind every great spy is an embarrassing sibling. Nobby has everything a man from Grimsby could want, including 11 children and the most gorgeous girlfriend in the northeast of England. There’s only one thing missing: his little brother, Sebastian, who Nobby has spent 28 years searching for after they were separated as kids. Nobby sets off to reunite with Sebastian, unaware that not only is his brother MI6’s deadliest assassin, but he’s just uncovered plans for an imminent global terrorist attack. On the run and wrongfully accused, Sebastian realizes that if he is going to save the world, he will need the help of its biggest idiot.

Director: Louis Leterrier

Cast: Mark Strong, Sacha Baron Cohen, Isla Fisher, Rebel Wilson, Gabourey Sidibe, Penélope Cruz

Sacha Baron Cohen is his usual chaotic genius self, and in this role there is a tenderness that may have been missing from the Ali G, Borat and other personas.

The trailers had been skillfully crafted so that the actual punch lines and scenes still took the audience back.

When the scenes with the elephant kicked in.. the whole audience broke state and cracked up.

This is extreme, it’s silly, it’s Grimsby.

Overall: 7/10 – Film Blast Hit or Miss
Story: 7/10
Acting: 7/10
Film: 8/10
Soundtrack: 8/10

P.S.

It’s interesting that Penélope Cruz played a similiar role to her Zoolander 2 role. we look forward to seeing her in a lady leading role soon.

Deadpool

Deadpool Synopsis

Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a former Special Forces operative who now works as a mercenary. His world comes crashing down when evil scientist Ajax (Ed Skrein) tortures, disfigures and transforms him into Deadpool. The rogue experiment leaves Deadpool with accelerated healing powers and a twisted sense of humor. With help from mutant allies Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), Deadpool uses his new skills to hunt down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Ok.. What can I say..

I went with friend, we laughed, we came out happy, as it ended I said “just the right length” and yes we stayed for the sugar at the end .. Wait for it after the credits

DeadPool is not your usual marvel / xmen action flick for the kids.

It breaks the rules and makes itself a place that will I’m sure be a favourite for many more years to come – especially with those old enough to watch it now.

Without spooling the film and gags – it combines a Liam Neeson nightmare reference that is just so spot on and is very self aware.

You can imagine that this was fun to make, though the story of its making I’m sure will be a documentary to be seen soon..

It’s recent opening box office success is quite surprising, but then the timing of the release is good with not much direct competition and it’s February and we want to laugh and smile..

Points to think about.. (Spoilers)

  • At the end she does seem to forgive him far too easily.
  • His thing is that he’s ugly.. but well.. he isn’t.. not one of us want oh my god.. put the mask back on.
  • The baddies not so bad?
  • Not the biggest plot
  • Female leads.. / evolved.. just felt a bit old school.

The movie stands alone.. but if you have an appreciation for the industry, for X-men, Agents of Shield, Captain America, etc.. then this is a movie you’ll enjoy.

It won’t be too all tastes.

But then that’s ok.

… a week or so on..

Do I want to watch it again.. well not really.. I’m sure.. I’ll catch it on netflix or something in years to come and laugh again, but for now I’m good.. now onto the next installment.

Final thought..
If a movie is meant to entertain, and have us thinking..then this does.
This is not your usual hero movie.

Zoolander 2

Zoolander 2

Yes you read that right. Zoolander 2.

It’s incredible to think that it’s been so long since Zoolander first came to screen and made Blue Steel and Magnum part of modern culture.

Perhaps you’ve never seen the first movie, well grab some popcorn and friends and settle in.

Zoolander 2 continues when we didn’t know how they could.

Penelope Cruz joins the leads, an ex swimwear model now Interpol agent .. Yes you read that right.

There are some great cameos and spoofs of other movies – subtly done and while it builds slowly, the whole cinema cracked up more than once.

For us this was a slow and unexpected surprise which made a great Sunday matinee movie.

This won’t win any best movies ever, but if you want to switch off and enjoy some fun then this maybe the movie for you.

We’re still stunned they managed to get Sting, Justin Bieber, Tommy Hilfigger and many more.

There’s also some classic product shots Uber.

So why the big names ? Perhaps enjoying the joke and for their kids / grandkids… ?

So, without spiking the plot.. Yes there is some cheesy weak acting moments, however if you like your fashion fabulous, and you want to laugh and let go for a bit, then maybe Zoolander 2 is for you.

The Delivery Man

This movie came and went and many people missed it.

The premise and the press junket.. made it seem like a classic comedy.

With Vince Vaughn – always the joker.. and Cobie Smulders (How I met your mother..)

we know what to expect right..

In truth, it’s very tender and points to human emotions.

It points to what matters.

Watch it..

Smile

You may even cry.

For those of us with children, who have lost children.

The script is beautiful.

Without Vince and Cobie it might have landed differently.

As it is.. it has a lightness and tenderness

that for us was apt and beautiful

Recommended.. 8/10
