Zoolander 2

Zoolander 2

Yes you read that right. Zoolander 2.

It’s incredible to think that it’s been so long since Zoolander first came to screen and made Blue Steel and Magnum part of modern culture.

Perhaps you’ve never seen the first movie, well grab some popcorn and friends and settle in.

Zoolander 2 continues when we didn’t know how they could.

Penelope Cruz joins the leads, an ex swimwear model now Interpol agent .. Yes you read that right.

There are some great cameos and spoofs of other movies – subtly done and while it builds slowly, the whole cinema cracked up more than once.

For us this was a slow and unexpected surprise which made a great Sunday matinee movie.

This won’t win any best movies ever, but if you want to switch off and enjoy some fun then this maybe the movie for you.

We’re still stunned they managed to get Sting, Justin Bieber, Tommy Hilfigger and many more.

There’s also some classic product shots Uber.

So why the big names ? Perhaps enjoying the joke and for their kids / grandkids… ?

So, without spiking the plot.. Yes there is some cheesy weak acting moments, however if you like your fashion fabulous, and you want to laugh and let go for a bit, then maybe Zoolander 2 is for you.

So.. is this the remake of British Cool.. the restart for JB.. James Bond.. we’ve been waiting for … or.. well something else.

Firstly this movie, knows it’s a movie, and know’s to play to the crowd.. the only question.. what crowd is it aiming at.. and we’re a little worried that it’s aimed after the kinda crowd.. that well.. isn’t necessarily the one we’d have chosen.. and in so doing.. will fail on multiple levels.. Yes it will get box office and applause.. but in a decade will it stand.. we think not. which is a shame.

There are some exceptional moments, some intelligent choreography and plot twists and for those of us who know.. http://s.ecret.me/ closer to the truth. (tell them Simon sent you..)

Ok.. the plus’.. it’s not overly sacharine.. You will laugh at time.. Strong athletics and physicality.. in places. Interesting plots and ideas..  One of the most striking is Algerian dancer and actress Sofia Boutella, who plays deadly henchwoman Gazelle.

The not so good.. overly gratuitous violence.. think for 15year old boys.. a weird anal sex line.. why required? what’s the point. Some silly overly simplified role plays – plebs vs not.. boys that say “bruv”..  The over the top swearing.. just so you can..

It was like someone had watched the English football hooligan movies and said.. what if we did that with James Bond.. and then had Mr Cool… Samuel L Jackson.. play the bad guy..

We overly simplify.

All in all.. we’re frustrated and fascinated.

This could have been amazing.

As it is.. I’m not even sure if we’d recommend you go watch it..

Shaun of the Dead – had humour..

Kingsman.. falls over and doesn’t quite cut it.

So.. who let the script through? do they care?

Will there be a sequel?

What could have been a really intelligent long standing movie that was genre defining was in our view let down by production and directorial vision..

We’ve been asked to help with a few film projects and we’re clearer why this happens.. Someone starts thinking ego, money and funny.. not real artwork and edutainment.

For me.. the opening pieces were most telling and poignant.

So.. if you loved The Avengers.. , 60s tv.. and well you want a silly movie.. watch this..

can you tell we’re confused our self..  we so want to love Kingsman…. time for a fan cut.. or reboot..

And Sir Michael C.. a gem as always..

The Book of Eli

The Book of Eli

The Book of Eli is a 2010 American post-apocalyptic action film directed by the Hughes brothers, written by Gary Whitta, and starring Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson and Jennifer Beals.

The movie came out and left many people blown away.

The vision of the future is very stark, and probably closer to one truth than many would like to consider. It clearly draws on several films from the past – mad max, many from the world of Asian cinema, and yet it has a very unique feel.

Denzel Washington remains in our view a real master of his craft and someone who we know is getting better and better.

For the would be film maker it highlights several key points.

The mind is more important than the reality.

A lot of the story of Book of Eli comes from the audience, the soundtrack, the look of the film, the editing and the production.

This is a movie that we urge you to watch (just don’t be in a scared mood before you do), and several of the key points will make you jump and raise your tension. Notice how they do this.

Also how “known” elements in a new context open up a whole new perception.

Total Recall – 2012 – Review

Total Recall

Total Recall

An interesting premise, a world with limited viable space, the idea of The Fall – a trans global though centre of the earth travel – and vision of the future has the seeds of a great movie.

Rekall.. where you can implant memories… What would you like… A spy perhaps?

The police crash in and the following scene is one of the best in our opinion.

The question of what is reality is a key one.

The opening sequence where our hero looks out onto the future world is usually impressive. A multi dimensional multi layered warren of housing and living space.

The scenes remind of many Sci Fi films, but this is no bad thing.

Add to this magnetic cars and a world filled with mag lev (magnetic levitation), and throw in the display glass of Minority Report and Day of Glass (Corning) ( see YouTube and be blown away ).

The catches:

Obvious plot glitches …. Why doesn’t the toxic air spread everywhere? Why doesn’t she just kill him when he’s asleep? Why would the prime minister also lead his own army with massive risk? What happens next? Was it all just a dream… ?

Overall:

It was a fun movie to watch for the boys night out. The chase scenes, the industrial spaces, and the not too serious dialogue. You may jump in parts. Enjoy.

P.s.
This is not the Total Recall of our child hood…

Visual: 7/10
Plot: 6/10
Script: 6/10
Fun: 7/10

Note:

Total Recall is a 2012 American science fiction action film remake of the 1990 film of the same name, in turn loosely based on the 1966 short story “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Unlike the original film and short story, the plot does not include a trip to Mars[4] and exhibits more political overtones. The film blends Western and Eastern influences, most notably in the settings and dominant populations of the two nation states in the story: the United Federation of Britain, and the Colony.
