Turbo Kid

This is a very interesting piece of film making.

We saw the trailers but hadn’t got around to watching it until today’s session.

Well filmed, clearly a love from the film makers for the subject, but not to everyone’s taste.

If you grew up on 70/80s films, games and tv series you’ll have a fondness which will help positively spin.

There are some touching moments.

There are some incredible shots.

There is genius in the costume, set and prop design.

Overall.. 6/10

  • Story: 8/10
  • Music: 8/10
  • Filming: 8/10

The negatives are the genre, Graphic violence albeit caricatured.

Stan Lee’s Lucky Man

Stan Lee’s Lucky Man show is a mix of British crime thriller at its best with a hint of agents of shield.

The premise.. A lucky charm gives the holder luck.

There is a cost though.. Everything must balance.

And so an innocent opening turns into chaos episode by episode.

Twists and turns.

This is not one for the kids though, dark, death, corruption and violence.

The episodes show the London we know so well, and there are some bigger arcs.

The universe of the show is very much modern day London now.

We kept wondering when there would be a crosse over to the world of Limitless or Mission Impossible or ..

So what would you do if you thought you were always going to have luck on your side ?

Oh and the underworld mastermind want the bracelet for themselves at all costs.

How far would you go?

Overall 7/10

Story: 7/10 – a bit normal and overly complex

Visual: 7/10 – British vibe .. Could have pushed it more .

Audio: 7/10

A doctor (Tom Hiddleston) moves into a London skyscraper where rising tensions and class warfare lead to anarchy

We walked in.. only knowing a little..

We left stunned.

This has the mix of elements and an amazing cast, that should make for a cult classic.

There are at least 3 movies in one..

The visuals are stunning.

The performances will take you by surprise.

The story has twists.

The end.. well not to the tastes of many.

Highlights: Jeremy Irons.. outstandingly believable and the visual look of the high rise.

  • Overall: 8/10
  • Story: 7/10
  • Acting: 9/10
  • Score: 8/10
  • Visual: 9/10

Ok.. so now for the spoilers. by the end.. there is truly shocking elements. Civilisation collapses. There is violence and death. This is not the movie for the kids on a Saturday night.

We left shaken and thoughtful.

It will stay with us.

This is what movie making was before the elements of VFX.. that cater to the masses.

I think the similarities between the poster for this and Clockwork Orange may tell you all you need to..

Bridge of Spies

Movie just finished .. Really quite good .. Makes you think .. And grateful for the times we live in today.

The Bridge of Spies, looks on the surface like a homage to many other spy movies, that we’ve grown to know and love, but the combination of Tom Hanks, and Steven Spielberg and a relatively unknown story and a great script create something that is quite mesmerising.

The story told from the other side would make an interesting compliment.

However the movie is made from a Western perspective, however without some of the filters we often face.

There are true characters and moments that make you feel.

And as you probably know by know what we love are those moments when light and sound on a screen truly move you.

We left thoughtful and grateful, Bridge of Spies is a thoughtful movie, a good movie, a great movie.

Several days later we’re still loving it, and happy to recommend it, and especially for those of us that remember when the wall came down in Berlin – and perhaps when it went up – makes you think.

How close we came..

Thank you Standing Man 🙂

Film Summary: During the Cold War, the Soviet Union captures U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers after shooting down his U-2 spy plane. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, Powers’ only hope is New York lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks), recruited by a CIA operative to negotiate his release. Donovan boards a plane to Berlin, hoping to win the young man’s freedom through a prisoner exchange. If all goes well, the Russians would get Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), the convicted spy who Donovan defended in court.

Storyline: 8/10 – great story and based in a real world that we still remember

Graphics: 8/10 – great moments and mood as you’d expect from a master

Casting: 7/10 – there’s only a few castings that grated, or perhaps weaker acting.. but generally spot on. the leads are truly on form.

Overall.. 8/10 – definitely one to watch

Whiplash

This movie.. is why we love movies.

Great story, great film, great ideas, and great energy.

The casting works well, and while some of the actors are well known they let themselves get into the parts.

There are a few scenes which go past the normal reality, but then that’s needed for this world of the hyper creative.

There is a clear love of music and love of the art.

Film Blast Off!!

One to watch

To become maximally creative we must risk everything – Simon Hedley

For those of us who’ve pushed past the boundaries many don’t know there are moments we understand. The love and “hate” we have for our coaches and mentors who aim to push past the limits we don’t even know we can surpass.

A first-year music student (Miles Teller) wins a seat behind the drums in a jazz band led by a teacher (J.K. Simmons) who uses fear and intimidation to push his students to perfection.
Initial release: January 16, 2014
Running time: 107 minutes

Kingsman The Secret Service

Kingsman The Secret Service

 http://www.kingsmanmovie.com/

So.. is this the remake of British Cool.. the restart for JB.. James Bond.. we’ve been waiting for … or.. well something else.

Firstly this movie, knows it’s a movie, and know’s to play to the crowd.. the only question.. what crowd is it aiming at.. and we’re a little worried that it’s aimed after the kinda crowd.. that well.. isn’t necessarily the one we’d have chosen.. and in so doing.. will fail on multiple levels.. Yes it will get box office and applause.. but in a decade will it stand.. we think not. which is a shame.

There are some exceptional moments, some intelligent choreography and plot twists and for those of us who know.. http://s.ecret.me/ closer to the truth. (tell them Simon sent you..)

Ok.. the plus’.. it’s not overly sacharine.. You will laugh at time.. Strong athletics and physicality.. in places. Interesting plots and ideas..  One of the most striking is Algerian dancer and actress Sofia Boutella, who plays deadly henchwoman Gazelle.

The not so good.. overly gratuitous violence.. think for 15year old boys.. a weird anal sex line.. why required? what’s the point. Some silly overly simplified role plays – plebs vs not.. boys that say “bruv”..  The over the top swearing.. just so you can..

It was like someone had watched the English football hooligan movies and said.. what if we did that with James Bond.. and then had Mr Cool… Samuel L Jackson.. play the bad guy..

We overly simplify.

All in all.. we’re frustrated and fascinated.

This could have been amazing.

As it is.. I’m not even sure if we’d recommend you go watch it..

Shaun of the Dead – had humour..

Kingsman.. falls over and doesn’t quite cut it.

So.. who let the script through? do they care?

Will there be a sequel?

What could have been a really intelligent long standing movie that was genre defining was in our view let down by production and directorial vision..

We’ve been asked to help with a few film projects and we’re clearer why this happens.. Someone starts thinking ego, money and funny.. not real artwork and edutainment.

For me.. the opening pieces were most telling and poignant.

So.. if you loved The Avengers.. , 60s tv.. and well you want a silly movie.. watch this..

can you tell we’re confused our self..  we so want to love Kingsman…. time for a fan cut.. or reboot..

And Sir Michael C.. a gem as always..

Ex Machina

Ex Machina – not the movie you’ll expect from the trailers.

Alex Garland’s stylish sci-fi thriller Ex Machina is out on limited release today (with full general UK release on Friday 23rd).  The film tells the story of a young programmer at the world’s largest internet company who wins a competition to spend a week at the retreat of Nathan, the company’s reclusive CEO.  When he arrives at the remote location he finds he has been chosen to be the human component in a test to evaluate the human qualities of Nathan’s latest experiment, a beautiful female A.I.  The eerie electronic score by composers Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) was mixed by Rupert Coulson.

In a current ever connected world, with the mega-corps being Apple and the like.. this vision of the future doesn’t feel like it’s too far ahead.

In doing this review we don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it yet. Which is quite challenging as we so want to to talk about those bits..

The visuals – fairly stunning and as we’ve seen special effects really make this movie work in the current time in a way they couldn’t before.

Our friends at Sharing Our Solutions showed us the holographic avatars are a few years ago and it helps connect the dots.

Twenty minutes before the end – we heard – “come on . When does this end ?” … we stuck with it and glad we did.

Too many overly gratuitous shots .. perhaps .. And do they really add to the story?
If we were to swap the genders of the roles would full frontal male nudity have been as acceptable.

We leave thinking..

Quiet..

This will take time to simmer ..

The ideas will definitely ripple and for those that are interested in the question of reality and authenticity it poses some distinct viewpoints which are refreshing.

As our mum heard her mum say “Don’t believe a sausage by its skin.

The Equalizer

FilmBlast: 8/10

The Equalizer is a movie that lives up to the trailer – if you like the genre.

We’re clear that is stepped up the bar around several areas, which we’ll let you enjoy to experience.

There are some more intelligent nods than in most action movies.. the old man and the sea.. and others.

Most interesting for our reviewers was the paradox of “You are who you are” and “You can chance who you are”.

Both these points of view and made clear and at the same time, left to be considered.

Denzel Washington does an amazing job of portraying a believable character, in a role which he has come to play in a number of films over the years.

This is great.. martial arts and speed/efficiency.. taking the best of true Tai Chi, Naked Kill, Krav Maga and other practical skills.

There are also nods at the end.. to the “Kung Fu” sagas and A-Team mythology. if no one else can help you.. make you can find..

Key Cast:

  • Denzel Washington
  • Robert McCall
  • Chloë Grace Moretz
  • Marton Csokas
  • Dan Bilzerian

Melissa LeoThe Equalizer

The Plot Summary:

McCall is a former black ops commando who has faked his death to live a quiet life in Boston. When he comes out of his self-imposed retirement to rescue a young girl, Teri, he finds himself face to face with ultra-violent Russian gangsters. As he serves vengeance against those who brutalize the helpless, McCall’s desire for justice is reawakened. If someone has a problem, the odds are stacked against them, and they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help. He is The Equalizer.

Top 10 Horror Movies

# 10 28 Days Later

download

It all started when a deadly virus swept the human population. Bike courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up in a hospital bed after 28 days in coma. For a moment there, it seems like he is the only man living on the face of the Earth. He isn’t alone however. London has been evacuated after the virus outbreak which turns its victims into mindless zombies. There are others who are not affected as well and they all team up to find other survivors.

Personally I don’t believe that it is as epic as most people did but still it’s a reasonably good zombie movie. Waking up to a zombie apocalypse is a scary thought and the film is successful in conveying that feeling to the audience.

#9 The Others

images (2)

The Others, starring Nicole Kidman as grace is a religious mother with two daughters who has moved with her family to a mansion, while waiting for her husband from world war 2.

It is a well-made creepy and scary movie blended with period drama. The plot is so intense, that it leaves a lasting effect. There aren’t too many movies like this around, which makes it truly stand out.

#8 The Mist

200px-Mist2007

The Mist is a horror novel written by the American author Stephen King. A small town in Maine is suddenly enveloped by an unusual mist that conceals otherwordly monsters.

At first I wasn’t impressed with the movie but as the story unfolds I find myself entwined with the story. It’s not your typical horror movie with crazy serial killer. It’s very thought provoking because as you watch the film you yourself will ask “What will I do if I were in their shoes?”.

#7 Bram Stoker’s Dracula

dracula-movie-poster-1992-1020540197

Bram Stoker’s Dracula is an American Horror film directed and produced by Francis Ford Coppola, based on the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker.

The story started when Vlad Dracula (Gary Oldman) renounces God after learning that his wife had committed suicide when she received a false report of his death.
Mina (Winona Ryder), Professor Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins) and Jonathan’s (Keannu Reeves) adventure now begins. As they encounter vampires, were-wolves and other
unworldly creatures.

Even if the film is quite old and doesn’t have superb special effects, the plot will surely keep audiences captivated, as Count Dracula enticed Mina in the film.

#6 Saw

saw_ver1

Saw film revolves around a kidnapped victim who is given an instruction explaining how to escape a gruesome death. The Jigsaw killer is the mastermind of the “games” that he intricately planned to have the victims play.

“Saw’ got its name from the first movie, the victims (Adam a photographer and Lawrence an oncologist) are chained at the ankles to pipes, Adam finds a bag containing two hacksaws which they use to try cutting through the chains. Adam breaks his and Lawrence realizes that the saws are actually meant for their feet.

Saw 3 is the most popular of the series if you are guessing which sequel to watch first.

#5 Child’s Play

movieposter

Child’s Play is a cheerfully energetic horror film. The film opens when a doll has been possessed by the mind and the soul of a mass murderer who studied voodoo from a  black magician. Chucky, the sinister doll is behind the killings and unexplained murders.

Of all the Child’s Play sequel it seems like the latest sequel is by far the most popular, Curse of Chucky. Child’s Play 3 is the least popular earning only $20,560,255 worldwide.

#4 Orphan

images

The movie Orphan revolves around the story of a family that adopted a nine year old russian kid named Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman). Behind the sweet innocent veil she is wearing, hides a deranged, creepy girl.

It can be concluded that Esther is just a little spoiled brat that gets what she wants, even if it means killing them.

Orphan is a chilling movie and I find the mind games very intriguing. The movie has an awesome twist at the end that is very unpredictable.

#3 I am Legend

I_am_legend_teaser

I am Legend is not faithful to the book it got its name from, but I don’t care. It’s a totally different media anyway. Even if Robert Neville (Will Smith) is the only man left living in the center of New York city, he is such a powerful actor that he alone made the film very engaging.

And although the special effects is substandard, the film compensates with a level of emotional depth and awe-inspiring plot.

#2 The Crow

crow

The Crow is based on a comic book by the same name, It stars Brandon Lee playing as Eric Draven. The story begins when a group of thugs murdered him and his fiance.

After a year he was resurrected by a crow that also acts as his guide showing him the way.

The Crow is a straight up revenge film. It’s gothic, dark and one of the best comic book adaptation ever made. It is a must see this Halloween season and I am certain
you will not get disappointed.

#1 The Sixth Sense

The_sixth_sense

The Sixth Sense is not a gruesome movie, unlike the other films we have in our list. The film revolves around Cole Sear’s (Haley Joel Osment) psychic powers to see dead people around him. He is constantly teriffied and he felt that he can only share his secret to Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) who is also a child psychologist.

However as the doctor probes into Cole’s strange power, instead of finding an answer, he is confronted with more questions.

Some critics argue that the pace of the plot is very slow and they are compelled to keep themselves awake until the movie ends. This might be true to some of the scenes, however the ending gives us an unexpected twist. Over all the movie is thought-provoking, The Sixth Sense is scary and smart, taking the number one spot in my
list.
