Kung Fu Panda 3

Kung Fu Panda 3

This is the movie we’ve waited for, for what seems like an eternity

When the first Kung Fu Panda came out, it was a breath of fresh air.

Unexpected.

Funny

Beautiful

Poignant

A decade later Po has met his father and … well.. sorry..

This could have been the movie to lift us all up.

As it was, it felt flat.

My friend who saw the screening said it best..

Visuals: 8/10 – it’s beautiful
Score: 8/10 – beautiful music
Story: 5/10 – … enough said

To make it worst.. we know chi masters.. we love tai chi.. ( www.MasterTaiChi.com ) , we love all the elements.. but if the first movie taught us that there is no secret ingredient… it perhaps didn’t get that message over.. The formula has been repeated. There were some incredible scenes, and unfortunately.. the movie turns into the worst of disney serial animation.

Perhaps .. the writers having turned out not just the movie, but countless episodes of kick, bash .. we win.., coupled with a need to keep the movie short for the young audience, took a movie that could have had depth and legacy and made well a nice.. easy to watch at home when babysitting movie.

Sorry..

The opening scenes were some of the best, and gave a set up for what could have been epic.

The challenge.. our dragon warrior is more and more a farce. He hasn’t really matured, and in many ways the time passed since the first movie has turned him into a character. On day one.. you can forgive the flaws.. but imagine Harry Potter facing Voldemort.. and dropping his wand and forgetting the spells.. it just wouldn’t cut it.

Did we enjoy it.. yes.

But then again we love movies.

Did we love it .. well NO..

If we could edit out the bad bits, and make an awesome 15 minute short film.. then yes.
But poor dialogues, weak story archs.. it feels like the franchise is dead.

The tragedy.. it will probably spawn another.. series.. based of the stories of Oogway or others..

However our enthusiasm is gone..

Sorry..

Overall : 5/10
Suggestion: watch at home with young kids..

Deadpool

Deadpool Synopsis

Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a former Special Forces operative who now works as a mercenary. His world comes crashing down when evil scientist Ajax (Ed Skrein) tortures, disfigures and transforms him into Deadpool. The rogue experiment leaves Deadpool with accelerated healing powers and a twisted sense of humor. With help from mutant allies Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), Deadpool uses his new skills to hunt down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Ok.. What can I say..

I went with friend, we laughed, we came out happy, as it ended I said “just the right length” and yes we stayed for the sugar at the end .. Wait for it after the credits

DeadPool is not your usual marvel / xmen action flick for the kids.

It breaks the rules and makes itself a place that will I’m sure be a favourite for many more years to come – especially with those old enough to watch it now.

Without spooling the film and gags – it combines a Liam Neeson nightmare reference that is just so spot on and is very self aware.

You can imagine that this was fun to make, though the story of its making I’m sure will be a documentary to be seen soon..

It’s recent opening box office success is quite surprising, but then the timing of the release is good with not much direct competition and it’s February and we want to laugh and smile..

Points to think about.. (Spoilers)

  • At the end she does seem to forgive him far too easily.
  • His thing is that he’s ugly.. but well.. he isn’t.. not one of us want oh my god.. put the mask back on.
  • The baddies not so bad?
  • Not the biggest plot
  • Female leads.. / evolved.. just felt a bit old school.

The movie stands alone.. but if you have an appreciation for the industry, for X-men, Agents of Shield, Captain America, etc.. then this is a movie you’ll enjoy.

It won’t be too all tastes.

But then that’s ok.

… a week or so on..

Do I want to watch it again.. well not really.. I’m sure.. I’ll catch it on netflix or something in years to come and laugh again, but for now I’m good.. now onto the next installment.

Final thought..
If a movie is meant to entertain, and have us thinking..then this does.
This is not your usual hero movie.

Bridge of Spies

Movie just finished .. Really quite good .. Makes you think .. And grateful for the times we live in today.

The Bridge of Spies, looks on the surface like a homage to many other spy movies, that we’ve grown to know and love, but the combination of Tom Hanks, and Steven Spielberg and a relatively unknown story and a great script create something that is quite mesmerising.

The story told from the other side would make an interesting compliment.

However the movie is made from a Western perspective, however without some of the filters we often face.

There are true characters and moments that make you feel.

And as you probably know by know what we love are those moments when light and sound on a screen truly move you.

We left thoughtful and grateful, Bridge of Spies is a thoughtful movie, a good movie, a great movie.

Several days later we’re still loving it, and happy to recommend it, and especially for those of us that remember when the wall came down in Berlin – and perhaps when it went up – makes you think.

How close we came..

Thank you Standing Man 🙂

Film Summary: During the Cold War, the Soviet Union captures U.S. pilot Francis Gary Powers after shooting down his U-2 spy plane. Sentenced to 10 years in prison, Powers’ only hope is New York lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks), recruited by a CIA operative to negotiate his release. Donovan boards a plane to Berlin, hoping to win the young man’s freedom through a prisoner exchange. If all goes well, the Russians would get Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance), the convicted spy who Donovan defended in court.

Storyline: 8/10 – great story and based in a real world that we still remember

Graphics: 8/10 – great moments and mood as you’d expect from a master

Casting: 7/10 – there’s only a few castings that grated, or perhaps weaker acting.. but generally spot on. the leads are truly on form.

Overall.. 8/10 – definitely one to watch

Sens8

Sens8, is the latest and most exciting new Netflix sci-fi drama series from Andy and Lana Wachowski (The Matrix etc.. ) and J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5).

This trio has produced some incredible and very timely.

Take a look at the work of David Garcia and Creative Transformation – www.See.org and The Creativity Challenge, and you’ll see some of the roots behind the roots of this show.

It’s a beautiful mix of judgement and opinion..

ps. not safe for work.. and definitely and adult show..

Whiplash

This movie.. is why we love movies.

Great story, great film, great ideas, and great energy.

The casting works well, and while some of the actors are well known they let themselves get into the parts.

There are a few scenes which go past the normal reality, but then that’s needed for this world of the hyper creative.

There is a clear love of music and love of the art.

Film Blast Off!!

One to watch

To become maximally creative we must risk everything – Simon Hedley

For those of us who’ve pushed past the boundaries many don’t know there are moments we understand. The love and “hate” we have for our coaches and mentors who aim to push past the limits we don’t even know we can surpass.

A first-year music student (Miles Teller) wins a seat behind the drums in a jazz band led by a teacher (J.K. Simmons) who uses fear and intimidation to push his students to perfection.

Summary: Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under signs that predicted future greatness, but her reality as a woman consists of cleaning other people’s houses and endless bad breaks. Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically engineered hunter, arrives on Earth to locate her, making Jupiter finally aware of the great destiny that awaits her: Jupiter’s genetic signature marks her as the next in line for an extraordinary inheritance that could alter the balance of the cosmos.

Ok.. so this movie had an amazing trailer, it’s made my the team that made the Matrix.. it’s going to be amazing.. and well.. it’s…

See we can’t even say it.. it just wasn’t.

They had the budget, they had the experience and what they produced.. was Cinderella in Space, meets Marvel Comic book special effects, meets… Game of Thrones..

Still sounding great right..

Our hero – rescuer.. can surf on the air.. with his boots.. – but for some reason no one else has them.. Think Marty McFly’s hover board.. only without the board.. again..cool right.

I think this is the catch.. at this point.. too many people went .. oh yes.. that will be cool.. and so what we end up with is a movie.. that’s almost non stop action.. lots of shooting and random bits..

Lots of deep plots that well aren’t that many twists.

Maybe too much memories of Flash Gordon..

Again.. we went in ready to love this.. ready to really love this.. and watching it on Imax.. some beautiful moments.. but lots of “really”… “oh really”..

Of course Bees were engineered.. of course a single broken piece of glass destroys an entire base.. – they can handle space and rescue suits that repair.. but a fire brigade or super repair crew.. of course not..

Cyber Punk still allusions to 16th century noble records and lawyers.. which are handled.. with a $100 bribe.. all just very surreal.. and well breaking the suspension of disbelief.

I think with the elements in place.. this could have been amazing.

I still some of the premises posed are smart.. but the resolution.. well just bad and unsatisfying.

This is a teen flick.. and not a good one.

This had promise.. and well I’m sorry.. but it’s one to Film Blast.

In a California beach community, private detective Larry “Doc” Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) tends to work his cases through a smoky haze of marijuana. One day, Shasta, a former lover, arrives out of the blue to plead for Doc’s help; it seems that Shasta’s current beau, rich real-estate tycoon Mickey Wolfmann, has a wife who may be plotting to commit him to a mental hospital. When Mickey and Shasta both disappear, Doc navigates a psychedelic world of surfers, stoners and cops to solve the case.

This movie.. was fun and amazing and surprising.

It’s dark and spins and twists.

The drugs elements play a part to the story, but if you’re not a part of that world or interested do play a big part to the story.

Joaquin Phoenix plays his role fully.. in an almost Johnny Depp’ esque mastery.. if you know what we mean.

There is a few castings.. we’d have suggested changing out.. but we’ll be nice for now..

There were also some gems.. the fact that they were filming in LA may have made that easier.

If you’ve ever visited there.. you’ll know the places and the “vibe” – think Venice beach at night.. and the contrast..

Rich => Power => Sex => Corruption

One of our favourite characters is Jade.. for so many reasons..

What’s real.. what’s paranoia.. enjoy the ride..

If you’ve seen Mulholland Drive this isn’t as dark.. but resonants with that original energetic.

Yes.. hard to describe without giving away the plots..   Yes extreme in places.. and yes possibly 15-30mins too long.. but all in all .. a movie that shows what film making can be .. and a great contrast to Kingsman.. out at the same time..

Ex Machina

Ex Machina – not the movie you’ll expect from the trailers.

Alex Garland’s stylish sci-fi thriller Ex Machina is out on limited release today (with full general UK release on Friday 23rd).  The film tells the story of a young programmer at the world’s largest internet company who wins a competition to spend a week at the retreat of Nathan, the company’s reclusive CEO.  When he arrives at the remote location he finds he has been chosen to be the human component in a test to evaluate the human qualities of Nathan’s latest experiment, a beautiful female A.I.  The eerie electronic score by composers Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) was mixed by Rupert Coulson.

In a current ever connected world, with the mega-corps being Apple and the like.. this vision of the future doesn’t feel like it’s too far ahead.

In doing this review we don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it yet. Which is quite challenging as we so want to to talk about those bits..

The visuals – fairly stunning and as we’ve seen special effects really make this movie work in the current time in a way they couldn’t before.

Our friends at Sharing Our Solutions showed us the holographic avatars are a few years ago and it helps connect the dots.

Twenty minutes before the end – we heard – “come on . When does this end ?” … we stuck with it and glad we did.

Too many overly gratuitous shots .. perhaps .. And do they really add to the story?
If we were to swap the genders of the roles would full frontal male nudity have been as acceptable.

We leave thinking..

Quiet..

This will take time to simmer ..

The ideas will definitely ripple and for those that are interested in the question of reality and authenticity it poses some distinct viewpoints which are refreshing.

As our mum heard her mum say “Don’t believe a sausage by its skin.

Interstellar 2014 Review

Interstellar 2014 Film Review

FilmBlast™ Ratings

  • Overall: Film Blast Off™
  • Visuals 9/10
  • Audio 8/10
  • Story 8/10
  • Summary: A Movie that will have you thinking about the very nature of time, space and our purpose here.. and maybe .. everywhere.
If you like Sci-Fi, you’ll love it..
  • Most Like: Gravity, Many Old school Sci-Fi/Anime.

Produced by Christopher Nolan.
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, Topher Grace, Michael Caine, Wes Bentley, John Lithgow, Ellen Burstyn, Matt Damon.

Interstellar is an epic and profound film with technical miracle and a powerful narrative in which a team of astronauts, led by Matthew McConaughey venture into the cosmos in search of a new home for humanity. The film presents the future now, with the biosphere of earth in the clutch of disease that blights food crops resulting in grey-brown powder drifting acrossthe land into houses, cars and in all spaces on earth resulting in famine.

Can mankind overcome this famine? What is needed to succeed? What is mankind doing that appears to be the right thing but for the wrong reason? In order to make progress, what must we leave behind?

The film explores extraordinary ideas and takes the viewer on an emotional roller coaster. The narrative presents a father following his destiny, leaves his family, including a daughter who is distraught with the decision of the father to honour his destiny to preserve the future of humanity by finding another habitable planet. The story is dramatized with intense plots that keep the viewer completely immersed in the twists and surprises within the story.

There is never a dull moment, humour, suspense, complex decisions, questions relating to love – what does love mean? How do we respond to time and survival? Do we care – Do we care for self or for the whole of humanity? The impact of quantum physics, the wormhole, the fifth dimension, nature of time as non-linear and the function of gravity.

The film presents more questions than answers for example, reflective questions relating to love and quantum physics. The viewer is left with complex ontological questions on the path is destiny as well as the power of commitment to an agreement.

Interstellar is a most accomplished film and I encourage you to view the film and keep the conversations on the future that we want to create active.
