  • Overall: 9/10
  • Story: 9/10
  • Graphics: 8/10
  • Sound: 8/10

The story has multiple layers.. simple and easy to watch for the kids (though still a few scary bits for the super little ones..), and at the same time a deeper layer for adults..

The world starts like you’d expect from a Disney cartoon and then takes a twist.

There is humour.

There are unexpected moments.

This is fun, easy and you’ll leave going.. that was worth it.

Kung Fu Panda 3

Kung Fu Panda 3

This is the movie we’ve waited for, for what seems like an eternity

When the first Kung Fu Panda came out, it was a breath of fresh air.

Unexpected.

Funny

Beautiful

Poignant

A decade later Po has met his father and … well.. sorry..

This could have been the movie to lift us all up.

As it was, it felt flat.

My friend who saw the screening said it best..

Visuals: 8/10 – it’s beautiful
Score: 8/10 – beautiful music
Story: 5/10 – … enough said

To make it worst.. we know chi masters.. we love tai chi.. ( www.MasterTaiChi.com ) , we love all the elements.. but if the first movie taught us that there is no secret ingredient… it perhaps didn’t get that message over.. The formula has been repeated. There were some incredible scenes, and unfortunately.. the movie turns into the worst of disney serial animation.

Perhaps .. the writers having turned out not just the movie, but countless episodes of kick, bash .. we win.., coupled with a need to keep the movie short for the young audience, took a movie that could have had depth and legacy and made well a nice.. easy to watch at home when babysitting movie.

Sorry..

The opening scenes were some of the best, and gave a set up for what could have been epic.

The challenge.. our dragon warrior is more and more a farce. He hasn’t really matured, and in many ways the time passed since the first movie has turned him into a character. On day one.. you can forgive the flaws.. but imagine Harry Potter facing Voldemort.. and dropping his wand and forgetting the spells.. it just wouldn’t cut it.

Did we enjoy it.. yes.

But then again we love movies.

Did we love it .. well NO..

If we could edit out the bad bits, and make an awesome 15 minute short film.. then yes.
But poor dialogues, weak story archs.. it feels like the franchise is dead.

The tragedy.. it will probably spawn another.. series.. based of the stories of Oogway or others..

However our enthusiasm is gone..

Sorry..

Overall : 5/10
Suggestion: watch at home with young kids..

Living large and loving life, Po (Jack Black) realizes that he has a lot to learn if he’s going to fulfill the next challenge from his beloved instructor (Dustin Hoffman). After reuniting with his long-lost father (Bryan Cranston), Po must transition from student to teacher and train a group of fun-loving, clumsy pandas to become martial-arts fighters. Together, the kung-fu brethren unite to take on the evil Kai (J.K. Simmons), a supernatural warrior who becomes stronger with each battle.

Deadpool

Deadpool Synopsis

Wade Wilson (Ryan Reynolds) is a former Special Forces operative who now works as a mercenary. His world comes crashing down when evil scientist Ajax (Ed Skrein) tortures, disfigures and transforms him into Deadpool. The rogue experiment leaves Deadpool with accelerated healing powers and a twisted sense of humor. With help from mutant allies Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand), Deadpool uses his new skills to hunt down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

Ok.. What can I say..

I went with friend, we laughed, we came out happy, as it ended I said “just the right length” and yes we stayed for the sugar at the end .. Wait for it after the credits

DeadPool is not your usual marvel / xmen action flick for the kids.

It breaks the rules and makes itself a place that will I’m sure be a favourite for many more years to come – especially with those old enough to watch it now.

Without spooling the film and gags – it combines a Liam Neeson nightmare reference that is just so spot on and is very self aware.

You can imagine that this was fun to make, though the story of its making I’m sure will be a documentary to be seen soon..

It’s recent opening box office success is quite surprising, but then the timing of the release is good with not much direct competition and it’s February and we want to laugh and smile..

Points to think about.. (Spoilers)

  • At the end she does seem to forgive him far too easily.
  • His thing is that he’s ugly.. but well.. he isn’t.. not one of us want oh my god.. put the mask back on.
  • The baddies not so bad?
  • Not the biggest plot
  • Female leads.. / evolved.. just felt a bit old school.

The movie stands alone.. but if you have an appreciation for the industry, for X-men, Agents of Shield, Captain America, etc.. then this is a movie you’ll enjoy.

It won’t be too all tastes.

But then that’s ok.

… a week or so on..

Do I want to watch it again.. well not really.. I’m sure.. I’ll catch it on netflix or something in years to come and laugh again, but for now I’m good.. now onto the next installment.

Jupiter Ascending

Jupiter Ascending: www.jupiterascending.com

jupiter

Summary: Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis) was born under signs that predicted future greatness, but her reality as a woman consists of cleaning other people’s houses and endless bad breaks. Ok.. so this movie had an amazing trailer, it’s made my the team that made the Matrix.. it’s going to be amazing.. and well.. it’s…

See we can’t even say it.. it just wasn’t.

They had the budget, they had the experience and what they produced.. was Cinderella in Space, meets Marvel Comic book special effects, meets… Game of Thrones..

Still sounding great right..

Our hero – rescuer.. can surf on the air.. with his boots.. – but for some reason no one else has them.. Think Marty McFly’s hover board.. only without the board.. again..cool right.

I think this is the catch.. at this point.. too many people went .. oh yes.. that will be cool.. and so what we end up with is a movie.. that’s almost non stop action.. lots of shooting and random bits..

Lots of deep plots that well aren’t that many twists.

Maybe too much memories of Flash Gordon..

Again.. we went in ready to love this.. ready to really love this.. and watching it on Imax.. some beautiful moments.. but lots of “really”… “oh really”..

Of course Bees were engineered.. of course a single broken piece of glass destroys an entire base.. – they can handle space and rescue suits that repair.. but a fire brigade or super repair crew.. of course not..

Cyber Punk still allusions to 16th century noble records and lawyers.. which are handled.. with a $100 bribe.. all just very surreal.. and well breaking the suspension of disbelief.

I think with the elements in place.. this could have been amazing.

I still some of the premises posed are smart.. but the resolution.. well just bad and unsatisfying.

This is a teen flick.. and not a good one.

This had promise.. and well I’m sorry.. but it’s one to Film Blast.

Ex Machina

Ex Machina – not the movie you’ll expect from the trailers.

Alex Garland’s stylish sci-fi thriller Ex Machina is out on limited release today (with full general UK release on Friday 23rd).  The film tells the story of a young programmer at the world’s largest internet company who wins a competition to spend a week at the retreat of Nathan, the company’s reclusive CEO.  When he arrives at the remote location he finds he has been chosen to be the human component in a test to evaluate the human qualities of Nathan’s latest experiment, a beautiful female A.I.  The eerie electronic score by composers Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow (of Portishead) was mixed by Rupert Coulson.

In a current ever connected world, with the mega-corps being Apple and the like.. this vision of the future doesn’t feel like it’s too far ahead.

In doing this review we don’t want to spoil it for those who haven’t seen it yet. Which is quite challenging as we so want to to talk about those bits..

The visuals – fairly stunning and as we’ve seen special effects really make this movie work in the current time in a way they couldn’t before.

Our friends at Sharing Our Solutions showed us the holographic avatars are a few years ago and it helps connect the dots.

Twenty minutes before the end – we heard – “come on . When does this end ?” … we stuck with it and glad we did.

Too many overly gratuitous shots .. perhaps .. And do they really add to the story?
If we were to swap the genders of the roles would full frontal male nudity have been as acceptable.

We leave thinking..

Quiet..

This will take time to simmer ..

The ideas will definitely ripple and for those that are interested in the question of reality and authenticity it poses some distinct viewpoints which are refreshing.

As our mum heard her mum say “Don’t believe a sausage by its skin.

Top 10 Horror Movies

# 10 28 Days Later

download

It all started when a deadly virus swept the human population. Bike courier Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up in a hospital bed after 28 days in coma. For a moment there, it seems like he is the only man living on the face of the Earth. He isn’t alone however. London has been evacuated after the virus outbreak which turns its victims into mindless zombies. There are others who are not affected as well and they all team up to find other survivors.

Personally I don’t believe that it is as epic as most people did but still it’s a reasonably good zombie movie. Waking up to a zombie apocalypse is a scary thought and the film is successful in conveying that feeling to the audience.

#9 The Others

images (2)

The Others, starring Nicole Kidman as grace is a religious mother with two daughters who has moved with her family to a mansion, while waiting for her husband from world war 2.

It is a well-made creepy and scary movie blended with period drama. The plot is so intense, that it leaves a lasting effect. There aren’t too many movies like this around, which makes it truly stand out.

#8 The Mist

200px-Mist2007

The Mist is a horror novel written by the American author Stephen King. A small town in Maine is suddenly enveloped by an unusual mist that conceals otherwordly monsters.

At first I wasn’t impressed with the movie but as the story unfolds I find myself entwined with the story. It’s not your typical horror movie with crazy serial killer. It’s very thought provoking because as you watch the film you yourself will ask “What will I do if I were in their shoes?”.

#7 Bram Stoker’s Dracula

dracula-movie-poster-1992-1020540197

Bram Stoker’s Dracula is an American Horror film directed and produced by Francis Ford Coppola, based on the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker.

The story started when Vlad Dracula (Gary Oldman) renounces God after learning that his wife had committed suicide when she received a false report of his death.
Mina (Winona Ryder), Professor Van Helsing (Anthony Hopkins) and Jonathan’s (Keannu Reeves) adventure now begins. As they encounter vampires, were-wolves and other
unworldly creatures.

Even if the film is quite old and doesn’t have superb special effects, the plot will surely keep audiences captivated, as Count Dracula enticed Mina in the film.

#6 Saw

saw_ver1

Saw film revolves around a kidnapped victim who is given an instruction explaining how to escape a gruesome death. The Jigsaw killer is the mastermind of the “games” that he intricately planned to have the victims play.

“Saw’ got its name from the first movie, the victims (Adam a photographer and Lawrence an oncologist) are chained at the ankles to pipes, Adam finds a bag containing two hacksaws which they use to try cutting through the chains. Adam breaks his and Lawrence realizes that the saws are actually meant for their feet.

Saw 3 is the most popular of the series if you are guessing which sequel to watch first.

#5 Child’s Play

movieposter

Child’s Play is a cheerfully energetic horror film. The film opens when a doll has been possessed by the mind and the soul of a mass murderer who studied voodoo from a  black magician. Chucky, the sinister doll is behind the killings and unexplained murders.

Of all the Child’s Play sequel it seems like the latest sequel is by far the most popular, Curse of Chucky. Child’s Play 3 is the least popular earning only $20,560,255 worldwide.

#4 Orphan

images

The movie Orphan revolves around the story of a family that adopted a nine year old russian kid named Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman). Behind the sweet innocent veil she is wearing, hides a deranged, creepy girl.

It can be concluded that Esther is just a little spoiled brat that gets what she wants, even if it means killing them.

Orphan is a chilling movie and I find the mind games very intriguing. The movie has an awesome twist at the end that is very unpredictable.

#3 I am Legend

I_am_legend_teaser

I am Legend is not faithful to the book it got its name from, but I don’t care. It’s a totally different media anyway. Even if Robert Neville (Will Smith) is the only man left living in the center of New York city, he is such a powerful actor that he alone made the film very engaging.

And although the special effects is substandard, the film compensates with a level of emotional depth and awe-inspiring plot.

#2 The Crow

crow

The Crow is based on a comic book by the same name, It stars Brandon Lee playing as Eric Draven. The story begins when a group of thugs murdered him and his fiance.

After a year he was resurrected by a crow that also acts as his guide showing him the way.

The Crow is a straight up revenge film. It’s gothic, dark and one of the best comic book adaptation ever made. It is a must see this Halloween season and I am certain
you will not get disappointed.

#1 The Sixth Sense

The_sixth_sense

The Sixth Sense is not a gruesome movie, unlike the other films we have in our list. The film revolves around Cole Sear’s (Haley Joel Osment) psychic powers to see dead people around him. He is constantly teriffied and he felt that he can only share his secret to Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) who is also a child psychologist.

However as the doctor probes into Cole’s strange power, instead of finding an answer, he is confronted with more questions.

Some critics argue that the pace of the plot is very slow and they are compelled to keep themselves awake until the movie ends. This might be true to some of the scenes, however the ending gives us an unexpected twist. Over all the movie is thought-provoking, The Sixth Sense is scary and smart, taking the number one spot in my
list.

Frozen Movie 3D

Disney Frozen Trailer

For those of us that love animated movies and in particular Disney movies, Frozen looks like a lot of fun.

The main characters are strong women (from the trailer) who live in a world that brings magic, fantasy and roles together. In short a Disney movie..

The animation looks great and plot looks to have enough to take the interest of boys and girls, mums and dads alike.

The snowman come alive is sure to be a favourite with the kids.

Let us know what you think..

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby Review

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby

The trailer is a wonderful piece of cinema – rich, luscious, enticing and teasing which we’ve come to love and expect from Baz Luhrmann.

So it was with anticipation that we went to the screening.

The movie starts slowly and draws you in, weaving a tapestry of plots and characters that will entice and revolt, delight and surprise.

To avoid too many more spoilers, this is an adult film with adult themes, which touched on many aspects and I’m sure will have people coming back to watch time after time.

The stellar cast including Leonardo DiCaprio, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire play their roles well and Leonardo is a great Gatsby. For a man who has played his life from the early days in stellar roles and living a Gatsbyesque lifestyle it seems apt.

This is a piece of art produced outside of time and with a heart that comes across.

It has some dark elements, which highlight all the more the good and joyful aspects of the movie.

Our need to fit in, to be perceived as doing right, to earn money, to love and be loved, to trust and be trusted – all these and more are exposed in this movie.
